Introducing The Healthy Barkery

We had the pleasure of chatting with Paulina from The Healthy Barkery to discuss all things starting a dog business, tips on learning more about nutrition and more!

  1. How did you get started with The Healthy Barkery?

When we got Atlas (our sprocker spaniel) back in August, I wanted to make sure he gets the best food and treats possible. After doing some research, I found a lot of dog bakeries, but none of them had any nutritional benefits to them, which actually led to me starting The Healthy Barkery. We launched on the 4th of December with a limited amount of biscuits, and a Christmas range which was really successful so we decided to release seasonal boxes with themed biscuits.

As time went on, I realised that it would be super useful to have more knowledge in that industry, so I decided to do a Level 3 in Pet Nutrition and I am currently in the process of completing a course in Canine Nutrition.

  1. What was the inspiration behind the brand?

We wanted to create a brand that speaks for ourselves and you’ll know straight away what we sell - that’s how The Healthy Barkery was born. We use natural powders in our icing which the colour is usually more pastely than vibrant hence why we decided to build our colour scheme around pastel colours.

  1. Tell us a bit about the ingredients and types of treats you have.

When it comes to the ingredients we use, I wanted to make sure that the treats are suitable for all types of dogs with all kinds of allergies, which is why all our treats are wheat and gluten free and do not contain any preservatives or additives. Most of our ingredients are organic and we are 100% natural which means there's no nasties in them. We use chia, flax and hemp seeds in our bakes as they have so many nutritional benefits and our icing is sourced from a trusted UK supplier.

We have a range of treats, ranging from vegan plain biscuits, to biscuits with icing, carob and even chocolate and iced doughnuts (dog friendly chocolate made out of carob of course!) And if a dog has an allergy, we take custom orders where we create personalised recipes to that dog's needs.

  1. What advice would you give someone who's thinking of learning more about pet nutrition?

It’s honestly such a rewarding thing to learn about as it opens so many opportunities. If you are into pet nutrition or just want to learn more about what you can and cannot feed your dog, I would definitely recommend it. It is not the most fun course to do, as there is a lot of material and learning to do, but it will be worth it in the long run!

  1. What is some key advice when finding the right diet for your pet?

I think it's all about finding out what your pet can and cannot have. More and more dogs nowadays get allergies and have intolerances to certain foods which sometimes can be difficult to spot especially when they’re a few months old as their tummies are super sensitive and anything and everything can affect them at that stage. Finding brands that you can trust is also super important.

  1. What's in the pipeline for The Healthy Barkery? Any new products on the cards anytime soon?

We have a lot planned for sure! We come up with new seasonal and themed boxes every month but we are planning to start expanding our healthy treats range into other categories - I don’t want to say too much as we are still at stage 1 but there’s definitely something exciting coming soon (fingers crossed!)
